Chair of Social and Political Ethics
The Department focuses on many aspects of political philosophy. Its research is conducted in the area of social and political ethics, practical ethics, history of social and political doctrines, theories of the mass media, philosophy of society and politics, theory of the state and law, and philosophy of the political sciences. The main purpose is to teach students to understand political issues and interpret them. Therefore our Chair seeks to provide a broad philosophical background and encourages students to discuss particular question at hand. They have many opportunities not only to formulate problems, solve them, put forward their own theses, but also to present them in a written form (either in Polish or in English). Students who decided to take classes in our Chair should not only be able to understand the ongoing social and political processes, but also formulate their own opinions and evaluate them. They are well prepared to work in administration, the mass media, and participate in educational and cultural activities.
Our Chair collaborates with other centres at home and abroad, e.g. the PAFERE Foundation (Warsaw), the Liberal Conservative Institute (Lublin), the Altas Foundation (USA), and the Acton Institute (USA). We organise conferences, publish papers, and translate texts.
The teaching staff of the Chair consists of four members. The Chair is chaired by Prof. Jerzy Gałkowski who conducts a seminar on social and political ethics; selected issues on practical ethics (lecture), and a doctoral dissertation. Other members of the staff: Jan Kłos (KUL Prof.): history of social and political doctrines (a pro-seminar in English), history of social and political doctrines (lecture), philosophical grounds of social doctrines (master's seminar); theories of the mass media; Dr. Małgorzata Borkowska-Nowak: selected issues of the philosophy of society and politics (lecture), social and political ethics (a pro-seminar), theory of the state and law (tutorials), philosophy of the political sciences (tutorials).
